Q. Why isn't there an opera at Sugar Creek in 2006?

A. Glenn Raymond Auditorium, the venue where Sugar Creek Symphony & Song has performed opera over the past three years, is scheduled to be under construction during the summer of 2006. The facility is owned by the Iroquois County Community Unit School District Number 9 and is used throughout the school year for school-related activities. As such, the work must be performed when school is not in session, and this has meant that the work must be performed over the summer.

The work consists of removing the existing flooring, leveling the floor, repairing any damage below the floor, and installing new flooring. The flooring dates back to when the facility was constructed in 1930 and is suffering from 75 years of wear.

Q. What does Sugar Creek Symphony & Song plan to do in 2006 instead?

A. In response to this situation, Sugar Creek Symphony & Song decided that for 2006 the company would perform works that are operatic in nature, but not a full production of an opera. Our goal is to maintain the momentum that we have built over the past three years and consistency in our musical offerings. We will also use the 2006 festival to introduce our audience to the operas we would like to perform in future years.

For the festival weekend of August 11-13, we will perform a concert of arias from Verdi operas on Friday, August 11, and a concert of arias from Mozart operas on Sunday, August 13.

These concerts will feature selections from operas that Sugar Creek is looking to perform at our festival in coming years and are meant to introduce our audience to what is to come for Sugar Creek.

Q. Will there still be an art fair in 2006?

A. The art fair, taste, historical monologues and pre-theater dining will all take place during the 2006 festival, just as in prior years.

Q. Will there be an opera in 2007?

A. Construction at our performance facility is scheduled to be completed in September 2006. As long as all construction is completed on schedule and no work is held over to the summer of 2007, the school district welcomes Sugar Creek to return to the Glenn Raymond Auditorium in 2007.

The dates of the 2007 festival would be August 10-12 and would feature Verdi's La traviata. You can help ensure that opera returns to Sugar Creek in 2007 by donating today.
