Michael Mayes

With a strong voice and even stronger sense of drama, baritone Michael Mayes is making waves in the opera world for his command of the stage and attractive masculine presence.

From Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore to Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, and from Guglielmo in Così fan tutte to Don Giovanni, Michael has taken on compelling roles with opera companies across the US:

Connecticut Opera | Madison Opera | Cincinnati Opera | Palm Beach Opera | Skylight Opera Theater | Opera Theatre Highland Park | Central City Opera | Union Avenue Opera Theatre | Fort Worth Opera | Arizona Opera

And in the 2009–2010 season, Michael joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

This August at Sugar Creek, he'll perform the role of the quick-witted Figaro in our production of Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). Tickets.

What the Critics are Saying about Michael

Opera News

“an arresting stage presence”

Duluth News Tribune

“As the barber Figaro, Mayes was exciting and mischievous in every scene. His voice could be velvety and insistent at the same time.”

Hartford Courant

Michael Mayes amplified the obsessive side of the Don (Giovanni) with ramped-up confidence and a fiery vocal performance.

The Leader

His physical acting is pure and believable; his laughter is natural and his breath full of intense feeling.
